SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH – @theallergyteam

I am so excited to announce that this Months spotlight is with the amazing Sarah Knight who set up @theallergyteam. The @allergyteam instagram account is full of amazing allergy friend food recommendations, advice and so much more.

  1. What are you allergic / intolerant to?

My eldest son, Will, is 9.  He’s allergic to milk and eggs.  My younger son Freddie is allergic to eggs and possibly pistachio.  We are waiting for a hospital challenge early in the New Year.  Will used to be allergic to hazelnuts and soya, but have grown out of them.  Freddie used to be allergic to wheat, cashews and almonds but has also grown out of them.

2. What is your favourite meal that you can safely eat?

Will loves pasta and tomato sauce.  Freddie loves baked beans on toast.  They have really different tastes which makes things interesting!  As a family, roast chicken is always a winner though.

3. Why did you set up your blog / Instagram page and what do you hope to achieve?

I set up The Allergy Team with my co-founder Jen to help families living with food allergies to thrive.  We really wanted there to be one place, people could come together and get verified information and support to help them with food allergies, which as you know, can be a really challenging condition to live with.  We bring top doctors, nurses, dietitians, psychologists and other professionals together on Q&As and workshops so people have access to great speakers to understand more about the condition, which is especially helpful at a time like covid when access to great care can be limited.  We also want families to feel they can do anything they want: party, eat out, travel the world etc and so try to give them the resources to help them with this.

4. What is your favourite piece of advice for people that have allergies?

Surround yourself with allies who understand the condition.  For me, as a mother of children with food allergies, this means other parents, school staff and family.  For my kids, this means having friends who look out for them.  Their friends really help my children feel included by asking their parents if they can have a cake and food suitable for my kids at their birthday party.

5. We are people behind our allergies, what would you say is the one most interesting non allergy related fact about you?

This fact should of course be about my children.  In addition to being crazy about football and lego, Will and Freddie are also mad about exotic sportscars and often try to persuade me to take them on a drive to spot fancy cars.  You should hear the yelps if a Lamborghini passes us on the North Circular…

I really hope you loved reading these amazing answers by the lovely Sarah Knight and thank you again for giving us an insight of your kids life living with allergies.
